| ||STRANGE TALES # 110UK EDITION (SCARCE) |
1ST APPEARANCE OF DOCTOR STRANGE !!
United Kingdom 'UK' Books were produced in the same press run as the U.S. Versions.
Due to logistical requirements in shipping abroad, it is believed that UK Copies were produced before the U.S. 12 cent version.
Deeper Color Depth:
The deeper color tones associated with these copies are a result of excess ink saturations into the print plates and onto the first copies off the press. During Production the 9d past up was pulled and replaced with the 12 cent paste up. Everything else remained the same.
In addition to being the first copies produced, United Kingdom copies, often referred to as 'Pence' or 'UK' Copies were produced in far less quantities as the U.S. 12 cent versions. Due to a significantly smaller population base as well as less U.S. comic character demand in the UK at the time, it is estimated that U.S print runs were upwards of 50 to 100 x larger than the UK print runs. In other words for every 1000 UK copies produced, it is estimated that 50,000 - 100,000 US copies were produced. Scarcity today can be measured by the naked eye. Chances are that you may have seen a UK copy in person before, but have you ever seen a UK copy of Hulk #1, FF #1, ASM #1, or in this case, Strange Tales #110 before ?
We can also do a comparison by using CGC's
As of today's date 3/14/2019 :
1,459 Strange Tales Graded Copies exist.
1,462 U.S. vs 19 UK Copies
To make it even more interesting, UK copies are far more difficult to obtain in high grade. Perhaps it was due to the excess handling in distribution, or the fact most copies that arrived in the UK were actually read, rather than collected. Excess copies to stick aside were few and far between. In checking the Census: 9.6 9.4 9.2 9.0 8.5 8.0 8.0 or better
U.S. 6 14 13 32 37 48 = 150
U.K. - - - - 1 2 = 3
You may ask yourself, How can this be, why have I not heard about this before now ? Well, UK's have been the Rodney Dangerfield of comics, they got no respect. You mean to say that Marvel's, make that, America's biggest heroes such as Hulk, Spiderman, Iron Man, Thor, Fantastic Four, and others, were on foreign soil before.. gulp, American soil ? This is blasphemy !! It may be pilgrim , but it's true.
Here is the real kicker ..... This is probably the absolute best kept secret in all of comics.
Ask anyone if they have seen the price variant to ASM #1. Not the 12 cent version, but the ___ version, and see if they can guess it.
I believe in the very near future '9d' comics, ESPECIALLY early Marvel Key's will drastically sell for multiples more than U.S. counterparts in the future.
Basic math sums it up.
There are 3 copies in the world that grade 8.0 or better. Why would anyone pay more for a version (U.S.) that appears common by comparison ?
Marvel's First Price Variant.
** EXTREMELY SCARCE **
This may be the ONLY shot you ever have of landing this copy in the upper echelon, that is unless you know the other two owners and you can convince them to sell !!
You are looking smack dab at 1 of only 3 in the World to Grade out at 8.0 or better.
You think this is scarce ? The highest Graded UK Fantastic Four #1 UK is a whopping 6.5 !!
